Upgrades put CDI on cutting edge of technology

NORWICH – Central Diagnostic Imaging in Norwich received new state of the art equipment Monday that will put them on the cutting edge of technology.
Trucks and fork lifts stood outside CDI Monday morning, preparing to off-load the 3,000 pound gantry of a new multi-slice spiral CT scanner. The CT scanner will be used for total body imaging. It uses X-rays to generate cross sectional images of the body.
According to Dr. Lawrence J. Rosenblum of CDI, the new machine has many advantages over the older technology. “The multi-slice scanner allows for rapid acquisition of cross sectional images and also allows you to reconstruct them into three-dimensional images,” Rosenblum explained.
The new machine scans 16 times faster than the older scanner. Rosenblum explained the significance of this advancement, pointing out that individuals have to stay completely still while the scan is being done. The new technology allows the images to be obtained in as little as four seconds, making it easier for patients to hold their breath and remain still for that amount of time.
The new scanner has more software, which allows for a wider range of use from the images obtained. “The scanner works with volume imaging. We acquire a whole body image, and then we can show any part we want,” Rosenblum explained. The images can be manipulated to show only the blood vessels or bones or any organ or organ system.
Rosenblum said the new technology could be used to perform traditional CT scans, angiographies, virtual colonoscopies and endoscopies and many other procedures.
CDI will begin using the new machine on Monday. Appointments utilizing the new machine have already been scheduled.
CDI also recently updated their MRI equipment. “We have the most advanced MRI in the entire region. You can’t get a better, higher quality or faster MRI anywhere than you can have right here,” Rosenblum explained.
The recent upgrades at CDI are part of the natural progression of medical technology according to Rosenblum. “As the field evolves, you have to keep up with the technology. It is a natural upgrade, but it puts us right on the leading edge of technology with this installation,” he said.
