New Berlin plans 5th annual community quilt show

NEW BERLIN – New Berlin is the place to be for quilt enthusiasts on Saturday, July 21 for the community’s fifth annual outdor quilt show.
The festivities get kicked off in the heart of the village at approximately 10 a.m., with workshops and children’s entertainment.
Linda Foote, chairperson for the quilt show, says starting the show in New Berlin was a way to bring attention back to the village.
“Someday I would like the show to resemble the show in Sisters, Oregon in which the entire community covers the village in quilts,” said Foote.
From 1 to 4 p.m., handmade quilts will be seen hanging from homes on porches throughout the village. In addition to viewing the quilts, there will be a contest for the best-liked piece at the New Berlin Housing and Preservation tent. In celebration of the Town of New Berlin’s Bicentennial this year, a special signature quilt was handcrafted by Foote and will be on display at the town office building. Also being unveiled that day will be an 1800s replica painting of the Town of New Berlin by local artist Jim Parker.
On hand for this year’s event is professional quilter Pat Sloan. Sloan started sewing as a child and continued to sew clothing for herself until she discovered quilting. She has now been in the business for 15 years. A few years ago Sloan started teaching putting her ideas into patterns. In addition to publishing her own patterns, she designs patterns for McCall’s Quilting, McCall’s Quick Quilts, American Patchwork & Quilting, Quilters World, Create & Decorate, and the Fons and Porter magazines. She also has several fabric lines with P&B Textiles.
Throughout the day Sloan will host workshops for the public. Workshops must be registered for in advance. From 9 a.m., to noon an appliqué floral basket and table runner workshop will be held in the Masonic Temple. Sewing machines will be provided for the morning class by AGR Sewing Center and will be for sale as well.
The afternoon workshop with Sloan will be held 1 to 4 p.m. participants will be making wool penny rugs for a $20 fee. There will also be a wool kit which is optional for $32. Pre-registration is also required.
In addition to the one -day quilting event, a tea and trunk show is scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m., Sunday including over 60 quilts.
Besides the quilts, which are anticipated to line the village, this year there are plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy. As in years past, children’s performer Skip West will entertain from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Hyde Park and Golden Artist will be on hand to offer an art enrichment activity for children. “Children will get a chance to paint sneakers in the park to benefit Relay for Life,” said Foote. There will also be self-contained walking tours as part of the bicentennial appreciation and the gallery will be open as well.
The South New Berlin Auxiliary will be cooking hamburgers and hot dogs in New Berlin and Saint Theresa’s Church will be having a chicken barbecue.
A stamp cancellation and cache will take place at both the South New Berlin and New Berlin post offices and at the town office throughout the day. Envelopes and postcards can be bought on-premises for the event.
This year’s quilt show is sponsored by the village of New Berlin, the Town of New Berlin Bicentennial Committee, Unadilla Valley adult and kids after school quilting class, Unadilla Valley’s Community School program and Little Foote’s Preschool. Butternut Garden Club of Morris provided flowers for the tea.
