Two Chenango County Firemen to be honored at convention
CHENANGO COUNTY – This week, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York will hold their 135 annual Firefighter’s Convention in Cheektowaga. The convention, which includes information about safety, volunteerism and equipment, will also include a memorial service where two Chenango County Firemen will be recognized.
“It (the convention) is a time for all the volunteer firefighters across the state to get together to share ways to improve fire safety, discuss ways to increase the amount of volunteers and to show advancements the fire safety service has generated over the past few years and into the coming years,” said Firemen’s Association member Ryan Watson.
The event is said to host volunteer firefighters from across New York state. During the four day convention, programs will include specialized fire safety seminars for members of the fire service; awards and honors for Firefighter, EMS Personnel, Teacher and Fire Safety Educator of the Year; as well as firefighter competitions.
The memorial service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday. The purpose of the event is to honor firefighters who were killed in the past year. This year among others, Roger A. Hutchinson and Donald Tobey of the Bainbridge Department will be remembered.
The convention will continue through Friday in Cheektowaga, a town just outside of Buffalo.
“On behalf of the residents of greater Buffalo – including Cheektowaga, Amherst, and my hometown of Williamsville - I officially welcome the members of FASNY and LAFASNY to our 135th annual Convention,” said Michael Wutz, president of FASNY. “This event is an opportunity to bring together our volunteers to help foster an exchange of ideas that will make New York’s fire service stronger and better.”
