State Troopers look for new barracks in Norwich
NORWICH – The New York State Troopers are actively searching to replace their current Norwich headquarters.
The current barracks are located on state Rt. 12 a few hundred yards south of Wal-Mart in the Town of Norwich.
Captain Rodney W. Campbell said that the current trooper location in Norwich was ideal, but the building itself could no longer support the growing staff and their technological needs.
“It’s been a few decades since the building was built – 1977 I believe – and the technological and equipment needs of several police departments across the state have grown considerably. We have also increased our staffing levels since then, in addition to other growing concerns,” said Campbell. The captain said he could not remember the exact numbers, but said there had been a slow and steady growth of personnel.
Town of Norwich Supervisor David C. Law said he had not approved any local permits regarding the troopers and has not yet been approached by any representatives.
The state currently leases the property and is looking for a new building near the City of Norwich, located in close proximity to Rt. 12 or county Rt. 32.
The capacity of the barracks is expected to be nearly double in size compared to the current location, as police said they are looking for between five and six thousand square feet for office space, at least a two-car garage and off-street parking for over 30 vehicles. The building also needs to have the capability of utilizing a stand-by emergency generator.
Campbell said there was some possibility that the state may decide to add on to the existing building. Campbell also said the move was still preliminary and could not pinpoint an accurate timeline for when a move or final lease could be approved.
“I know that they’re currently looking around the area, I’m not sure of the degree of their progress. Any final decision will be carefully selected to fit all our needs, not just for today or tomorrow, but for the long term,” said Campbell.
