Rainbow's End Redemption Center opens in Norwich
NORWICH – A new business in Norwich is designed to be both convenient and environmentally friendly – the Rainbow’s End Redemption Center in the Town of Norwich.
“We started the business because we felt like there weren’t many alternatives in the area. We liked the idea of having an environmentally friendly business,” said Roberta “Bert” Bartle, owner.
Bert runs the business with her partner, Tracy Bartle. Bert decided to open the business after being a volunteer EMT for 15 years in Oxford and a paid EMT for Superior for 11 years.
“I’m a little burned out after all those years, and I always wanted to run my own business. We did a lot of research into several different ideas, and we chose this one,” said Bert.
The Rainbow’s End Redemption Center accepts a wide range of materials from aluminum and tin to paper and plastic. The center will sort cans and bottles for its customers as long as they are clean, said Tracy. All containers must be cleaned out and have all traces of food or liquid removed. “Remember, all containers that are not cleaned out are not recyclable,” said Tracy. Once dropped off and counted, customers will be given the standard five cent deposit per item.
The business makes its profit from the deposits and sorted material by selling them, a ton at a time, to a recycling manufacturer. They take in cans, bottles, cardboard, number one and two plastic jugs, newspapers, magazines, paper board and office paper.
The center is already working with a few non-profit groups to aid in their fundraising such as the local sport fundraisers and the girl and boyscouts.
Rainbow’s End is sponsoring a drawing for all its customers this month. The prize is an evening for two at Serenity Farms Bed and Breakfast in Greene, which includes an overnight stay and breakfast.
To find Rainbow’s End at 5106 State Hwy. 12, Town of Norwich, travel about one mile south along Route 12 from the Lower Ravine Road traffic light at the Rt. 12 intersection.
The center is open five days a week, Tuesday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information call 334-5350.
