Trojans eye repeat title
GREENE – A familiar foe awaits Greene tonight at 8 p.m. when the Trojans look to defend their Class A Section IV field hockey title at Dick Hoover Field in Vestal.
The Trojans (16-2), who haven’t lost in six weeks, face Whitney Point in a rematch of last year’s final (a 3-1 Greene victory). Whitney Point was the last team to defeat Greene this season, and tonight’s matchup is the rubber match of a three-game set this season. “I think we’re pretty confident going into the game, we just have to play our game and find ways to score,” said Trojans coach Sue Carlin.
If the Trojans exude a level of confidence, it may stem from a decisive 3-0 shutout of the Golden Eagles in the two clubs’ latter meeting this season. Greene went on to claim the Section IV, Division I title by a slim margin over the Golden Eagles. “The last time we played Whitney Point, that was pretty much as well as we can play,” Carlin said. “You have to against teams like that.”
One might argue that the Trojans are just a break or two from an unbeaten season. Against Marathon in the Oxford tournament, Greene held a significant statistical edge, but fell by one goal. It was a similar circumstance against Whitney Point, who came away with a 3-2 victory. “Those two games could have gone either way,” Carlin said. “I think this team was able to build off the mistakes we made in those games. The team has really matured. Before, if we made a mistake, it might have taken them out of the game mentally. If they make a mistake now, they know it’s okay because they can make up for it some place else.”
The Trojans’ prolific offense against shows strong balance with any number of players able to test the opponents’ defense. Andrea Day has a team-high 21 goals, Holly Davis has 15, and sophomore Erin Smith has 10 tallies. Anna Crumb, who scored in last year’s sectional final win, and sophomore Christine Conroe are also integral parts of the offense. All of them need to be in top form when they attack Whitney Point’s defense, led by all-star goalie Alesha Widdall. “She has kept their team in games all year, and they’ve been able to win a couple of games with just one shot,” Carlin said of Widdall. “We’ve been able to penetrate their defense and had good second chances against (Widdall). We know she’ll make some great saves, we just hope to eventually find a way to score.”
