'Extreme Makeover' episode has Sherburne connection

SHERBURNE – Anyone familiar with ABC’s Sunday lineup knows that the cast of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” can create an extraordinary house in an insanely short amount of time, but that task is about to become a little easier with the help of BuildBlock Insulating Concrete Forms, like those distributed in Sherburne.
At 8 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 9, ABC will broadcast a new episode of “Extreme Makeover,” during which the cast will build a 2,732 square foot home in only 106 hours. This achievement was made possible due to the fact they used BuildBlock ICF construction as opposed to stick built construction.
Sherburne’s West Lake Village used the same exact type of forms to construct the Eldershire living community, and co-owner of the community Donald Westcott is a BuildBlock distributor.
According to Dianne Antaya, community manager at West Lake Village, “The BuildBlock forms look like two inches of styrofoam on each side with reinforced steel segments in the middle.” Once placed, the forms are filled with four inches of concrete.
The “Extreme Makeover” crew used the forms to build a “green,” energy efficient home for the Vitale family. This marks the first time ICF construction has been used on the show.
Antaya explained that the ICFs are much faster going up than typical stick built construction would be. The forms come in a range of sizes and are assembled by snapping them into place. In addition to being quicker, Antaya explained that the forms are 10 times stronger than traditional home construction and are fire, tornado and earthquake resistant.
“One of the reasons we used them here (at West Lake Village) was because of the insulating factor. It also cuts down on the noise from outside the building and adjoining buildings,” Antaya explained. She estimated that in Sherburne, the buildings constructed with ICFs were saving on heating and cooling costs by approximately 50 percent, with some areas seeing a 70 percent decrease over a normal stick built home.
“We’ve been here all summer, and we didn’t use the air conditioner once,” Antaya said, explaining that the ICFs have an R value of 60.
“With so much emphasis on saving trees and the environment, these forms are ideal, because they are 100 percent green material,” Antaya explained, saying there is no asbestos, no formaldehyde and the concrete doesn’t disintegrate, giving the building more than double the life span of a traditionally constructed building.
Antaya said the ICFs are also less expensive than traditional materials. “There really is no down side, because of the environmental factor, the federal government offers an energy efficient tax credit of more than $2,000 on new homes,” Antaya said.
At West Lake Village, each building contains eight housing units. Antaya explained that it took approximately two weeks to construct each building. As more of the West Lake Village complexes are being assembled, Antaya explained that the Sherburne based community will continue to use the BuildBlock forms and planned to build according to the Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines, so individuals would be able to age in place.
For more information about BuildBlock ICFs visit www.buildblock.com or call West Lake Village at 674-2650. Antaya invites anyone interested in the construction to visit West Lake Village and see the forms in use.
