Bricks & Mortar Report

EDITOR’S NOTE: The Bricks & Mortar Report provides updates on major construction projects in Chenango County.

Chenango County Highway Department:
• Highway work crews took advantage of the warmer weather last week to cut trees in the right-of-way along county roads in Pharsalia and Bainbridge. Public Works Director Randy Gibbon said additional tree service experts were hired on to take down trees that were a threat to houses or power lines.
• Workers also hauled stone from the county highway department on Rexford Street in the City of Norwich to different towns where it will be needed next spring and summer for road resurfacing projects.

Chenango County Waste Management Department:
• The newly built 3-acre deep cell at the Chenango County landfill in the Town of Pharsalia was completed last September and came in under budget, officials say. It should be in use by mid-year.
• The project was expected to cost about $2.5 million, including engineering fees. County surplus and set aside DPW funds were applied.
• The new cell should handle the county’s waste disposal needs for another 7 years.

Chenango Union Printing, Inc.:
• Longtime business owners Andrew and Pam Phelps last month completed the construction of a 42x54 foot addition onto their American Avenue building in the City of Norwich.
• Their recent business acquisition, which offers customers direct mailing solutions, has been operating out of the new space on the building’s east side since Dec. 15.

Hayes Office Supply:
• Renovations continue on the second floor of this longtime, Norwich-based office supplies store. To make room, the company’s owners have temporarily rented space around the corner on Broad Street to showcase its new and used office furniture merchandise.
• General Manager Mike Hayes said chairs, filing cabinets and computer work stations have been on display in the new location since early December.

Halfway House Bridge (County Route 32B):
• Construction resumed during last week’s weather break. State surveyors for the new bridge project have approved the shipment of steel for arrival at the end of February.
• Tioga Construction of Herkimer are contractors for the $2.9 million project. It is 95 percent funded via the federal and state highway departments.
• The Chenango County Department of Public works anticipates an August 2008 opening date.
