Pole announces retirement from DCMO BOCES

NORWICH – The most senior District Superintendent of the 37 BOCES in New York State announced his retirement at the DCMO BOCES Board of Education meeting held last week.
Alan Pole has served as District Superintendent for the Delaware-Chenango-Madison-Otsego BOCES since July 1, 1990. Prior to that, he served as the Deputy Superintendent at the Onondaga-Cortland-Madison BOCES in Syracuse where he worked for sixteen years.
District Superintendent Pole shared the news of his retirement with staff and colleagues in area schools and across the state. “It has been my privilege to serve as the District Superintendent for the DCMO BOCES for the past 18 years. At this time, however, I am looking forward to retirement to be able to spend more time with my family.”
A graduate of Niagara University and Syracuse University, Mr. Pole currently resides in Norwich where he is active in several community organizations. Mr. Pole has served as statewide Chair of the District Superintendents in New York State. He has served as Interim District Superintendent for five different BOCES in Central New York and the Southern Tier. His plans are to relocate to the Syracuse area with his wife, Maryalice. His effective date of retirement is August 31.
Upon learning the news of Alan’s retirement, Bob Mackey, Superintendent at Unadilla Valley Central School stated, “His leadership has been so important for our group of superintendents. His communication abilities, his expertise and advice he provides are his strengths. He is a solid instructional leader as well as a managerial leader and during the referendum phase of the BOCES facilities project his presentations with local school boards and the community were well done and communicated clearly the needs for renovation and expansion. I have heard time and time again from superintendents from other BOCES regions how well organized things seem to be here and they attribute it to Alan’s leadership. He understands the issues that superintendents face and he is more than willing to listen to us. I wish him well – this is an exciting opportunity for him to start a new chapter of his life… a new beginning.”
Board President Timothy Thomas, who served on the BOCES Board when Alan was hired, summarized what the impact of Alan’s tenure at BOCES means for the future of the region’s educational community. “Alan's insight and leadership have helped to build the DCMO BOCES into a fine and well respected educational organization dedicated to the children and school districts we serve. Although he will be greatly missed, we move into the future knowing that the BOCES he leaves behind is a strong and cohesive organization prepared to face the educational challenges of tomorrow because of his dedicated service."
The Board will begin a search for Pole’s replacement in the near future.
