Cook Park rates to increase again

GREENE – Seasonal camping rates at Chenango County’s Gaius Cook Memorial Park, located about five miles south of the Village of Greene, will go up again this summer despite a decrease in revenues last year.
Members of the Agriculture, Buildings & Grounds Committee agreed to a seasonal rate of $750. Day use rates remain the same at $3 per car. Assistant Superintendent of Buildings Grounds Brian Aiken said camping and day use of the park remained consistent.
There were 29 seasonal campers in 2004 at $600 and 20 in 2007 at $700. “We have lost season campers with the increase of the season rates,” Aiken said.
Taxpayers kick in about $20,000 per year to keep the park operational, according to the committee. “Looks like a law of diminishing returns to me,” Peter C. Flanagan, D-Preston, said.
Town of Coventry Supervisor Janice O’Shea recommended researching funding mechanisms within the county’s various departments, such as the Chenango County Youth Bureau and Cornell Cooperative Extension, in order to build an interpretive trail and purchase rowboats for the 22-acre pond. Only 18 of the park’s 80 acres are developed.
“If we make it more attractive for day and weekend campers with kids, we might possibly get a few more, especially with the high price of gas,” O‘Shea said.
“The park’s sitting stale right now,” Aikens said. “Either we are out to move on this, or not.”
Flanagan suggested tapping into the county’s set-aside account for planning and economic development. “Why not use funds we’ve already levied?” he asked.
Cook Park’s season runs from May 14 through Oct. 1. Down payments on campsites are due March 15. Call 337-1479 for more information.
