Minor flooding forecast for Sherburne, Bainbridge
CHENANGO COUNTY – Warm temperatures and rain that began on Tuesday and continued overnight are causing problems in some areas of Chenango County, and minor flooding could occur.
Water in many streams throughout the county have reached bank full, but do not appear to be in danger of flooding over; however the Chenango River at Sherburne and the Susquehanna River at Bainbridge are forecast to reach flood stage before the waters crest.
A flood watch is in effect for all of Chenango County until this evening. A flood watch means there is the potential for flooding based on the current conditions. In Sherburne and Bainbridge, a flood warning has been issued, which means flooding is expected to occur.
The Chenango River in Sherburne is expected to rise above flood stage by late Wednesday morning. Flood stage for the area is eight feet. At that point, the river begins to overflow on the east side. The river is expected to rise to nearly 8.7 feet by Wednesday evening before receding Thursday morning.
The Susquehanna River at Bainbridge is expected to reach the 13-foot flood stage by Wednesday evening. The river is expected to rise to at least 14.7 feet by Thursday morning, and additional rises are possible after that time. Flooding in the surrounding fields is possible.
Norwich Emergency Management Officer A. Wesley Jones said the flooding will be minor. “We’re forecasting minor flooding in low-lying areas,” Jones said. “We got a fair amount of rain, but not enough to cause a lot of major problems.”
Temperatures this afternoon are expected to drop below 30 degrees, causing the remaining precipitation to fall in the form of snow showers. The flood watch will remain in effect until early evening; however no significant flooding is expected.
