S-E sixth graders show life in ancient Greece

SHERBURNE – After completing a history unit on ancient Greece, the sixth grade class at Sherburne-Earlivlle Middle School donned their togas and held a Greek Festival Tuesday night to show the community what they had learned.
“The sixth graders study ancient Greece for about a month,” said teacher Jonathan Burke. “At the end of the unit, we hold an Agora marketplace, and the students have to market a topic of their choice.” Burke explained that the topic could be anything they had learned about, including ancient Greek food, medicine, soldier’s recruiting, Plato’s Academy, or an array of other topics.
The students performed presentations before the event, including Power-Point presentations or videos. For example, one student who was marketing Greek food made a cooking show-type video to show what they had learned. Another group focused on the Olympic Games, and created an ESPN broadcast using historical information.
During the Greek Festival, students dressed in togas and set up booths in the halls of the middle school to present their products to the public. Following their presentations, the students formed groups representing each of the Greek city states and marched into the auditorium to Olympic fanfare. Students also performed a series of short plays, including a play written by a student, a teacher written mythology, which served as an introduction to the Greek gods and goddesses and one of Aesop’s fables.
The Sherburne-Earlville Greek Festival has been a tradition at the school for several years. “The students love it. They are learning a lot, and they have more of a hand in the learning experience,” Burke said. The teacher explained he liked the structure of the festival because it allows the students to learn from each other in addition to what they learned in the class room.
This year’s sixth grade class is made up of approximately 125 students, and Burke estimated that a crowd of 300 to 400 would attend the event. “History is something that you either love or hate, and this helps to create a fun experience and give the students something they remember. Hopefully they are learning about the culture as well,” Burke said.
