Earlville Youth leads police on Friday night car chase through city

NORWICH – A car chase with a 17-year-old youth crisscrossed through the greater Norwich area Friday night before the suspect lost control of his vehicle in the City of Norwich and was boxed in by police.
“This incident was brought to a safe end thanks to the cooperation of all the local agencies,” said Detective Sgt. Richard Cobb of the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office.
The case originated at about 10:30 p.m. Friday in the Town of North Norwich when a sheriff’s patrol attempted to pull over a vehicle for speeding on East River Road.
The 17-year-old was operating the vehicle without a license and fled from deputies, leading them into the City of Norwich where the suspect then left the city limits, only to return again a few minutes later. The Norwich City Police Department and the New York State Troopers aided in the chase, which came to an end on Mitchell street.
The youth lost control of the 2005 Dodge Stratus he was operating while negotiating a turn and police vehicles boxed in the car, said Norwich Police Chief Joseph Angelino.
Cobb said the driver, a 17-year-old from Earlville, was charged with unlawfully fleeing police in a motor vehicle, second degree reckless endangerment and numerous traffic infractions.
Angelino said the city was going to charge similar offenses for the crimes committed in its jurisdiction.
The youth was taken to Chenango Memorial Hospital with minor injuries and was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $8,000 cash bail.
An 18-year-old passenger, Brennan Slater of Sherburne, was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and released.
