City temporarily waives heating system permit fees
NORWICH – The winter heating season is upon us, and the City of Norwich is hoping to encourage residents who will be installing new heating systems this year to get a permit.
During its October meeting, the Common Council decided to temporarily waive the permit fee for the installation of a new heating system. The permits will still be required, but for a limited period of time the fee to acquire the permit will be waived.
“We’re doing this to promote the safety of the residents of the city,” Mayor Joseph Maiurano said, explaining that residents would still be required to comply with all installation requirements and have the installed system inspected by the city.
Typically, permit fees cost $50 for a system up to 185,000 BTUs, $150 for a system with 185,000 to one million BTUs and $525 for a system with over one million BTUs.
The permit waiver will be in effect until March 1.
In August, the city also waived the permit fees for the installation of wood stoves. Due to the fluctuation in the cost of heating fuel, the council said many people may be looking for alternative methods of heating their homes this year. In August, they waived the $50 permit fee for the installation of indoor wood stoves. The wood stove permit fee will be waived until Dec. 31.
Maiurano said the fee waivers will encourage proper permitting and inspection of systems within the city and promote safety. According to officials, several residents have already taken advantage of the fee waiver.
Permits for installing a heating system or wood stove can be filed at the Norwich City Hall.
