Local aviation enthusiasts recognized

NORWICH – Aviation enthusiasts gathered to recognize the contributions of some of their own at the Experimental Aircraft Association Annual Dinner and Holiday Party.
Joe Toriello, Steve Bliss and Dave Dibbell were recognized with Service Awards during the event.
Comprised of local recreational pilots, flight instructors, experimental aircraft builders and balloonists, EAA is dedicated to generating interest in aviation. The local chapter is led by President Dave Sheldon.
It is important to have the annual gathering, said Sheldon, in order to recognize all the local organization does each year.
“The real key purpose (of EAA) is getting young people involved in aviation,” Sheldon explained.
One of their most notable efforts each year is the Young Eagle Program, which provides free flights to young people interested in flying. According Dibbell, who coordinates the program, more than 40 of the free flights were given in 2008.
“It continues to be a large part of Airport Day,” said Sheldon, referring to the event held each June at Lt. Warren E. Eaton Airport in Norwich.
The organization also provides scholarships to local graduates interested in pursuing a career in an aviation-related field. One recent scholarship recipient, Elizabeth Lewis, is studying in the engineering program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, reported EAA member Robert Benton.
For his role with the Young Eagle Program, as well as his contributions as the chapter’s secretary and newsletter editor, Dibbell was recognized with a total of three service awards.
“Without [him], the organization would cease to function,” said Sheldon.
“Function is a word that doesn’t apply here,” laughed Dibbell as he graciously accepted the certificates.
Both Chapter Treasurer Joe Toriello, an ultralight pilot, and Vice President Steve Bliss, a balloonist, also received Service Awards for their efforts in promoting aviation and contributions to the organization.
“Thank you for your continued involvement in aviation,” said Sheldon.
Sheldon also had words of appreciation for Toriello and his wife for organizing the dinner, and Geri and Fred Barnes, owners of The Cafe Connection, for hosting the event. The Barnes’ are avid balloonists and members of EAA.
