Results of rail study to be released next week

NORWICH – Area residents interested in the future of Chenango County’s rail corridor will have two opportunities to hear the results of a recent study designed to explore potential uses for the line.
In response to public concern regarding the future of the rail corridor, Development Chenango (formerly the Chenango County Area Corporation) commissioned a study to explore potential uses for the rail corridor last year. The results of the study, conducted by TranSystems/Stone Consulting over an 8-month period in 2008, will be presented during two stakeholder meetings next week.
The meetings, which are open to the public, will take place at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 26 and 9 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 27 in the Commerce Chenango offices on the second floor of The Eaton Center.
“We hope this provides ample opportunity for all interested parties to hear the results of the nearly year-long effort, and discuss the potential for redevelopment of the rail line,” said Commerce Chenango President Maureen Carpenter in a letter to stakeholders.
Randall Gustafson, the consulting firm’s operation manager, will present the study findings. According to Commerce Chenango, his presentation will include “an analysis of rail assets, independent appraisal of the line, short line freight opportunities, excursion/scenic rail opportunities, rails with trails” and recommendations for future use of the line.
The New York Susquehanna & Western Railroad effectively discontinued service along much of the 40 miles of the Utica Main Line through Chenango County in 2006, when the line was damaged by flooding. The line has since been reopened as far south as Sherburne, with additional portions of the track being used as storage for rail cars.
In addition to local officials and members of the public, at least one representative from NYS & W is expected to attend.
Copies of the report’s summary will be on hand for attendees, but only a limited number of the full final report will be made available. Those interested in obtaining a copy should contact Jennifer Tavares at 334-5532 or via email at jtavares@chenangony.org.
Those who plan to attend are asked to register for the event by Tuesday. To do so, contact Commerce Chenango at 334-1400 or via email at info@chenangony.org.
