Hurricanes claim Sidney AAU title
SIDNEY – The Norwich Hurricanes’ boys’ basketball team kicked of their 2009 AAU season in fine fashion finishing 4-0, while also winning the 17-and-under bracket at this past weekend’s April Fool’s Ambush in Sidney.
In the ‘Canes’ only game on Sunday, they defeated the Indians, a team composed of players from the Southern Tier, 57-37, in a matchup of pool play winners.
Josh Borfitz topped the Hurricanes with 13 points, and he was capably assited by Seth Thomsen’s 11 markers. Jon Foulds added nine points, Richie Bonney and Casey Edwards eight each, and Derek Hughes chipped in with half a dozen. The champions were greated aided by 23-for-29 shooting from the foul line.
“Great ball movement and tremendous team defense,” was how Hurricanes head coach Mark Abbott summed up the title tilt. “They had a tremendous size advantage, but our effort was far superior. We never backed down and never gave in.”
In Saturday’s opener, Borfitz single-handedly outscored the CNY Trailblazers, 31-30, and Bonney added nine in a 58-30 romp. Eight baskets from downtown were included in the lefty sharpshooter’s total, and the Hurricanes had 11 field goals from beyond the arc.
Game two was Norwich’s tightest of the weekend, a 58-46 victory over the Warriors. Edwards led the way with 11 points, while Borfitz and Hughes split 20 points evenly.
The trifecta of wins was completed as the Hurricanes raced to a 36-16 halftime lead against the Wolfpack on their way to a 54-34 victory. Seven different Hurricanes had at least five points with Borfitz the only one in double figures as he finished with 11.
Other contributers to the championship were Andrew Austin, Josh Favaloro, Dennis Oralls, and Frank Somich. “That sure is a great way to start our season,” Abbott said.
