Top county spots unopposed in November

NORWICH – Last Thursday was the final day for candidates to file a designated petition on behalf of the five major parties in the upcoming Chenango County elections.
There is only one candidate for each of the open positions of Sheriff, County Court Judge and County Clerk.
The deadline for those wanting to run expired July 16 for the Democratic, Republican, Independence, Conservative and Working Family parties.
However those wishing to file an independent petition, apart from any party, may still do so between Aug. 11 and 18.
The Board of Elections said Tuesday morning that Republican Ernest R. Cutting was the sole candidate for the office of Sheriff. Cutting was appointed as acting Sheriff in June and was former Sheriff Thomas J. Loughren’s undersheriff.
Cutting is a life-long resident of Chenango County and graduated from Afton High School. He joined the sheriff’s office in 1986 at the age of 21 as a deputy. In 1994, he was promoted to lieutenant and tasked with supervising jail administration. Cutting was promoted to undersheriff in 2002. His record includes the 1992 New York State Deputy of the Year Award, after Cutting disarmed an emotionally distraught man attempting to rob a Village of Oxford restaurant.
Cutting said Friday he plans to announce his appointment for undersheriff in the days to come.
Republican incumbent W. Howard Sullivan is running unopposed for Chenango County Court Judge. Sullivan graduated from LeMoyne College in Syracuse and completed his law degree at Temple University Law School. He entered public service as a Chenango County Assistant District Attorney in 1972, became the DA in 76 and then served as Norwich City Court Judge from 1977 to 1999, when he was appointed to the judgeship in April. He was elected to the appointed position later in Nov. of 1999 and has served as Chenango’s County Court Judge since. The position is a ten year term.
The only democratic runner for county office is incumbent Mary C. Weidman for Chenango County Clerk. Weidman has been county clerk since 1994, serving four consecutive four-year terms. She started working for the public in 1967 as a case worker for the Onondaga County Department of Social Services. She returned to Chenango in 1970 as a DSS case worker. After working in the position for three years, she was appointed the department’s training and employment director until 1984. She served as deputy commissioner of DSS from 1984 to 1993, when she left the position to pursue a career in her current office.
