New Berlin police led on a short but fast chase

NEW BERLIN – The New Berlin Police Department was drawn in a high speed chase in excess of a 100 miles per hour Friday which led to the apprehension of the vehicle’s Pittsfield driver and officers discovering a small amount of drugs in his car.
The driver, 18-year-old Schuyler M. Schmidt, was issued multiple tickets for various vehicle and traffic law violations that included speeding, failing to comply with a lawful order and unsafe turning. He also faces misdemeanor criminal charges of reckless driving and unlawful possession of marijuana.
Police said the incident began when a patrol car observed Schmidt traveling north on State Route 8 in the Town of New Berlin at a high rate of speed. When the patrolman attempted to pull the vehicle over, Schmidt allegedly refused to comply and tried to flee police.
Officers reported that the brief chase reached speeds just over 100 miles an hour. After pulling the car over, the patrolman allegedly discovered a quantity of marijuana in the defendant’s vehicle.
Schmidt was arraigned in Town of New Berlin Court before Judge Joseph Brillinger and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility in lieu of $500 cash bail. He is scheduled to appear back in court Oct. 13.
