Races for council, highway in Pharsalia this year
PHARSALIA – There are two races in the Town of Pharsalia this election year, one for two seats on the town council and the other for highway superintendent.
Democrat Dennis O. Brown, 60, is running unopposed for supervisor, a position he has held since 1983 when he was appointed to fill a vacancy. He won the election for a two-year term in 1984 and has held the position ever since. Brown is vice chairman of the Chenango County Finance Committee and a member of Agriculture, Buildings & Grounds.
Clerk of the Board Susie P. Granger is also unopposed for the position she has held for 4, two-year terms.
There are two seats open on the town council and four candidates for voters to consider: Incumbents Arthur L. Grover, Dem., and Gary R. Loomis, Rep.; former Highway Superintendent Clayton M. Alger, Rep.; and newcomer William H. Olsen, Rep.
For the Superintendent of Highways job: Thomas M. Slate, a Democrat, and Michael E. Murray, Jr. a Republican, both political newcomers, are running.
The town’s 2010 highway budget is $179,500, down $200 from last year, and the general budget amount of $115,490, also down about $2,000 from last year. Supervisor Brown said a new highway superintendent will reduce the town’s cost for health insurance and fewer oil and stone roadway projects are planned next year.
Pharsalia voters cast their ballots at the Town Hall on 1040 County Rd. 8 in East Pharsalia.
