Greene reaches Section IV finals

DELHI – Delhi may have earned the higher seed and a home game in the playoffs, but it was the Trojans who once again proved they were superior to the Bulldogs.
In another demonstration of second-half dominance, Greene (17-1) beat Delhi for the third time this season scoring all of its goals in the second half on Wednesday afternoon.
The Trojans meet Marathon in the Section IV Class C championship game Saturday at 11:15 at the Soccer Hall of Fame fields in Oneonta.
“It’s hard to beat a good team three times, and Delhi is a very good team,” said Greene third-year coach, Rick Tallman. “We came out and played hard and aggressive. We managed to put it together today.”
Unlike the first two meetings where Delhi countered often and had the Trojans on the defensive, it was Greene who controlled play, almost from the opening kickoff. The Bulldogs were missing a key player on defense, their starting sweeper, so they resorted to packing in the defense, Tallman said.
As a result, scoring opportunities were not as prevalent for Greene’s top scorers, Alex Driscoll and Ryan Ludwig. “It was kind of shocking to me that they played that way, but it’s also a big compliment to Alex and Ryan for all of the hard work they’ve put in,” Tallman said. “(Alex and Ryan) deserve that respect, so we had to find other ways to get people in to score.”
After a scoreless first half, Greene struck just 3:08 into the second half. Ethan Buhl made a run from his center midfield position, and redirected a cross from Ludwig into the left side of the net.
Eli Marks also pushed forward from the stopper position to net the second goal with 12:30 remaining. Driscoll found the scoring range with just 1:31 left in the game.
In Greene’s three meetings with Delhi this season, it has outscored the Bulldogs a combined 8-0 in the second half. “We’ve been a second-half team all season,” Tallman said. “We’ll have to fix that against Marathon.”
Greene finished with a 15-2 edge in shots on goal.
