Norwich competes well at Windsor
WINDSOR – Norwich sent only five wrestlers to the Windsor tournament, but had four top-four finishes, and placed 10th out of 21 teams on Tuesday.
Frank Garcia (103) reached the finals before dropping his match to Windsor’s Jesse Holton by pinfall. Garcia advanced to the title bout after beating defending sectional champion, Jacob Green of Chenango Forks, 5-3 in the semifinals.
Tristan Rifanburg, a seventh-grader like Garcia, fell 5-4 in the semifinals, but battled back for third place in the 96-pound division. “It was a great tournament for our two young guys, and it was a good opportunity for us to find out where we need to be at the end of the year,” said Norwich coach Joe Downey.
Tanner Cummings (112) and Keegan Levesque (189) each entered the competitive tournament as number five seeds, and each surpassed that seeding placing fourth. Cummings won three of four matches on Tuesday, and Levesque nearly avenged a blowout loss in the third-place match losing a tight 9-7 decision to Union-Endicott’s Mike Bishop. “There is room for improvement for all of our guys, we just need to keep working hard,” Downey said.
Norwich hosts Maine-Endwell on Jan. 5.
