Laytham appointed interim principal

OXFORD – The Oxford Academy Central School District’s board of education has appointed Janet Laytham to fill the high school principal position on an interim basis in the wake of administrator Christine Pierce’s resignation.
Laytham, who has served as the district’s coordinator of student learning for the past four years, will assume her new responsibilities on April 5.
“I’m really excited about (taking on the role),” said Laytham, who explained that she had already begun to work closely with Pierce to ensure a “smooth transition” for the building’s students and staff.
“I have some big shoes to fill,” she said, of her colleague, who will be leaving the district for a position with the Village of Greene.
Laytham said one of the things she is looking forward to most is the opportunity to work more directly with students, something she has missed since her days in the classroom. She spent the first 15 years of her career as a High School English teacher at Gilbertsville - Mt. Upton.
After leaving G-MU, she worked as an itinerant curriculum coordinator through DCMO BOCES, during which time she was shared between Oxford and another district. She began to work full-time for Oxford Academy the following year. She obtained her administrative certification in 2008, after completing an administrative internship with the district.
It is Laytham’s background as an educator as well as her years at Oxford which makes her ideally suited to the position, according to Superintendent Randy Squier.
“It is because of Jan’s outstanding work as our coordinator for student learning and her experiences as a high school teacher, that I had no reservations in recommending her to complete the school year as high school principal,” he explained.
Squier said he believes Laytham will bring a “level of positive energy” to her new position and that he and other members of the administrative team will support her as she makes the transition.
According to District Clerk Michele Rice, Laytham’s interim position will expire on June 30. On that date, the coordinator of student learning position she has held for the last four years will also be abolished. It is one of two administrative positions slated for elimination “for reasons of economy” in the proposed budget for the 2010-2011 academic year.
The decision regarding whether or not the district will conduct a formal search for permanent replacement for Pierce has yet to be decided, according to the superintendent. Squier said the hope is that Laytham will be successful in the high school principal position and the appointment would be made probationary at the conclusion of the interim contract.
According to Rice, Laytham will remain at her current salary, $67,000, for the duration of her interim appointment. Pierce’s ending salary was $74,500.
