Unemployment ticks slightly up in March after two months of lows
NORWICH – Chenango County’s unemployment statistics in March improved over the past two months when record highs were reported.
The county’s jobless rate was 9.9 percent in March, down from 10.5 in February and 10.4 in January, according to a report Thursday from the New York State Labor Department office in Binghamton. The previous record high, 10.3 percent, was set back in 1994.
Last month’s figure compares to 9.8 percent unemployment in March of 2009.
Chenango County’s unemployment rate last month exceeded that of the five neighboring counties: Delaware County came in at 9.3; Broome County hit 9.0; Otsego had 8.2; and Madison reported 8.7 percent.
New York state’s jobless rate was 8.8 percent in March, down from 9.2 percent in February. The nation’s rate was 10.2 percent.
Sales tax collection in Chenango County for the first two months of the year remain flat, according to Treasurer William E. Evans.
Only $900 or .04 percent more was taken in during the same period in 2009.
Evans said he wasn’t sure whether the local economy had hit bottom or not.
According to the New York State Association of Counties, if the first quarter sales tax receipts are any indication, 41 upstate counties are still mired in the 18-month recession that continues to slow retail sales in most New York communities.
