HANCOCK – Cody Wellman blasted a grand slam in the second inning as Hancock shot past G-MU, and eliminated the Raiders from the Section IV, Class D playoffs Wednesday
Wellman singled and scored in the first inning following an errant pickoff throw, and he capped an uprising in the second that began with two outs and no runners on base. “We were able to come right back in the second inning, and it looked good after getting the first two outs,” said G-MU coach Jim Johnson.
Rocco Christian started the rally with a single. A walk and a fielder’s choice led to Tom Bannicky’s RBI single. Wellman put his club in the lead, and finished his day 2-for-2 with two walks, four RBI, and two runs scored.
“We ran into a little bit better team tonight,” Johnson said. “They took advantage of the little mistakes that we made.”
G-MU scored four in the second getting a two-run single from freshman Tim French, and RBI single from Ian Edwards, and Alex Schmidt completed the rally with a run-scoring double. Corin Todd and Brenden Zucchi had two hits apiece for the Raiders (13-6).
“We struck out only five times today, they just fielded the ball extremely well,” Johnson said. “They had to make plays on 12 ground balls, and they made them all. We knew we could play with them, it just didn’t work out for us.”
Tyler Phillips capped Hancock’s scoring with a three-run double in the sixth.
