Youth to form Young Democrats chapter in Chenango County
NORWICH – Too many young people don’t care about government, according to James Zieno of Norwich, and with the formation of a local chapter for young Democrats, perhaps that will change, for both parties.
No stranger to politics, Zieno, who is 16, has actively campaigned for candidates and helped get the vote out as a participant with the Chenango County Democratic Committee over the past two years. He said he plans to major in political science in college and then go into politics.
He hopes a club for young Democrats will inspire Republican youths to get more involved, too.
“Even though the Republican Party outnumbers the Democrats by a large margin in Chenango County, they don’t have a club for young supporters either,” he said.
An information meeting is planned for organizing a New York State Young Democrats chapter in Chenango County on Wednesday, July 28, at Guernsey Memorial Library in Norwich. To be recognized as an official chapter, the group must number 15. While Zieno said he didn’t see that happening right away, it is his goal.
Zieno said the group might only meet six months out of the year around election time and sponsor events like meet the candidates night or a fundraiser dinner. He plans for it to be a “fun” group with meetings held at the bowling alley or at a cafe, not in the traditional office setting.
“We need to get the youth involved, and most youths don’t want to be in a traditional committee,” he said.
New York State Young Democrats President Kevin Lawrie will be the featured speaker at the first meeting.
“This election cycle coming up is very similar to what we saw in 2008 and it is a priority of mine, as the President of the NYS Young Democrats, to make sure that the youth participation is even better this time around. I’m excited to have the opportunity to work with Jamie and all Young Democrats throughout Chenango County, as we move forward in what is sure to be an interesting election year,” said Lawrie.
Also planning to attend the meeting at Guernsey are Broome County Young Democrats chair Tara DeNucci and New York State Young Democrats Rural Caucus leader Jenni Royer.
The exact time for the meeting is still undetermined. Contact Zieno at jpz17@yahoo.com for more information.
