Sherburne man charged with DWI, assault after allegedly running over his passenger
SHERBURNE – The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 26-year-old Sherburne man Saturday night, claiming he forced two female passengers and a baby from his vehicle before running one of them over.
Lt. Richard Cobb said police believed Lee A. Warner was intoxicated at the time of the incident.
Cobb said Warner was traveling at around 11 p.m. with two adult female passengers and an infant in a car seat when a heated dispute began. During the argument, the vehicle pulled over along Granville Hill Road in the Town of Sherburne so one of the passengers could exit the vehicle.
“One female victim started to get out of the vehicle and he shoved her while moving the car. The second female occupant also exited the vehicle and was trying to get the baby out of the car seat,” said Cobb.
Cobb said although one of the women successfully retrieved the infant from the car, the other fell to the ground and had her legs and feet run over. She was later transported to an area hospital and released. Cobb said he could not recall the extent of her injuries.
According to police, Warner then left the women and the infant along the roadway, but was picked up 15 minutes later by a Sheriff’s patrol in North Norwich, allegedly intoxicated.
Cobb also said two of the victims riding in the car had active orders of protection forbidding Warner from having contact with them.
Warner was charged with second-degree assault, aggravated criminal contempt and driving while intoxicated, felonies. He was also charged with second-degree criminal contempt, second-degree reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child, misdemeanors.
He was arraigned in Town of North Norwich Court and held on $20,000 cash bail.
