Supervisor wants to revive Airport Day

NORWICH – Town of Norwich Supervisor David C. Law longs for the heyday when the county’s annual “Airport Day” attracted thousands to Lt. Warren Eaton Airport for pancake breakfasts, flight exhibitions and rides.
The event has suffered over the past several years for lack of attendance and exhibitor participation. As the county’s economic development chairman this year, Law has taken incremental steps to change course, and is planning ahead.
“It needs to be more of a community celebration day. Let’s raise some funds and get this thing going,” he said Tuesday.
The Chenango County Airport Steering Committee, under the direction of Law’s Planning and Economic Development Committee, have already set Saturday, June 11, 2011 for the celebration. They also named a director, Frank Turner, to spearhead everything from fundraising and sponsorships to getting the local fire and police departments and Young Eagles chapters involved. Turner, who is currently the facility’s maintenance worker, was asked to also solicit military aircraft, helicopters and even, possibly, an F-16.
On Tuesday, Airport Administrator Don MacIntosh filled Law’s committee in on other developments underway at the North Norwich airport, including the construction of a new taxiway, some painting projects and other improvements.
Contractors are scheduled to break ground Monday for a taxiway that will eventually serve approximately 10 new t-hangars planned at the airport. The work project should be a month-long process, and the county was able to rent vacant office space at the airport to the engineer for the duration. The hangars will be bid shortly after that, said MacIntosh.
The airport has accepted an offer from a regional Experimental Aircraft Association chapter to paint the fuel tanks, a new compass rose and the airport’s name on the taxiway. Steering Committee Director Mathew Giltner said no tax dollars will be used for the painting or supplies.
An agreement to install a credit card reader and set a price for fuel is under review by the county’s attorney, the last step in the process of making the county’s airport more friendly for fueling. Once out of review, officials anticipate that the system will be installed and fully operational by Sept. 1. The plan is to price fuel lower than competing airports in the region.
A new security camera will be installed to verify users should there be billing discrepancies as well as to count the number of aircraft using the fueling terminal.
MacIntosh reported that tenant Plane Leather, Inc. was moved into rented hangar space and successfully doing business. “Discussions for expanding their rental space have been floated should their business continue to grow,” he said.
In the long-term, the Federal Aviation Association has approved funding for three projects (minus 2.5 percent that would come from the trust fund): An obstruction study, widening the runway from 75 feet to 100 feet and resurfacing the runway. Town of New Berlin Supervisor Ross Iannello warned the committee to keep track of the projects – which could take 20 years or more to complete – in order to make sure they move forward before paying engineering consultant fees for them again.
The committee passed a resolution requesting that Chairman Richard B. Decker sign the FAA agreements.
