Supervisor wants to revive Airport Day

NORWICH – Town of Norwich Supervisor David C. Law longs for the heyday when the county’s annual “Airport Day” attracted thousands to Lt. Warren Eaton Airport for pancake breakfasts, flight exhibitions and rides.

The event has suffered over the past several years for lack of attendance and exhibitor participation. As the county’s economic development chairman this year, Law has taken incremental steps to change course, and is planning ahead.

“It needs to be more of a community celebration day. Let’s raise some funds and get this thing going,” he said Tuesday.

The Chenango County Airport Steering Committee, under the direction of Law’s Planning and Economic Development Committee, have already set Saturday, June 11, 2011 for the celebration. They also named a director, Frank Turner, to spearhead everything from fundraising and sponsorships to getting the local fire and police departments and Young Eagles chapters involved. Turner, who is currently the facility’s maintenance worker, was asked to also solicit military aircraft, helicopters and even, possibly, an F-16.

On Tuesday, Airport Administrator Don MacIntosh filled Law’s committee in on other developments underway at the North Norwich airport, including the construction of a new taxiway, some painting projects and other improvements.
