Solar Funk Society new on the local music scene

NORWICH – The Sherburne-based Solar Funk Society is a rarity in Chenango County these days, as it’s not too often local music lovers have the chance to experience some true-to-form, old school funk mixed with modern dance and disco.
That will be the case on Friday as the group makes its second appearance at the Blarney Stone Pub, and guitarist Mark Sherwood said he and the band are ready for a good time.
Formed in the spring of 2010, the four-piece funk ensemble were just starting out when they first appeared at the Blarney Stone, and owner Sarah Woods said she’s “really excited to have them back.”
For the band – Sherwood on guitar, Kyle McIntyre on bass guitar, Steve Jackowski on drums and Shelly Harris on vocals – it’s simply one more chance to do what they love best – have some fun performing while continuing to build a dedicated following.
With influences ranging from James Brown to Joe Stone, the Red Hot Chili Peppers to Stevie Wonder, Prince and the Jackson 5, the members of Solar Funk Society are out to show local fans of “the funk” just how much they’ve improved since their first visit.
“It’s a tough market and a tough sell, lots of people go out just to hear the same old covers,” said Harris, known for her DJ and Karaoke work throughout the area in the past. “We’re looking to do something different and fun that you don’t really see around here.”
Sherwood, whose musical exploits over the past two decades are well known throughout the area, said the idea for the band came to him while on his first date with the woman he’s now engaged to.
“We went out and saw a couple of straight-up and classic funk bands and I just thought they were really good,” stated Sherwood. “The idea is to give people a reason to dance, keep having fun and do what we do.”
In addition to Friday’s performance, the band will appear from 9 to 11 p.m. on Saturday at the Copper Turret, Morrisville, and Oct. 30 at the Honky Tonk Saloon, Sherburne.
Solar Funk Society will perform from 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Friday at the Blarney Stone Pub, 26 South Broad St. There is no cover charge. For more information call 336-2630.
