Oxford to hold two public meetings prior to capital project vote
OXFORD – The Oxford Academy and Central School district will hold two public forums to give residents the opportunity to learn more about the proposed $10.16 million phase two capital project before they vote on Nov. 18.
The first of the two meetings will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 4 at the Oxford Middle School. The second is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 10 in the high school’s Oxford Academy Performing Arts Auditorium.
The session will include a presentation highlighting the areas which will be addressed in the project, as well as a question and answer period. Members of the district’s administration and board of education will be on hand, as will consultants from the Bernier Carr Group.
The scope of the proposed $10,160,375 project includes $7,150,880 in improvements at the Oxford Middle School – to include reconstruction of existing classrooms and facilities, installation of equipment to enable wireless connectivity, elevation of the boiler room and conversion of the building’s steam heating system to hot water.
An additional $2,848,069 will be spent at the High School to relocate the district and special programs offices, expand the school’s art room, develop a shared entrance with the Primary School, and site work, including new bleachers and other improvements to the school’s athletic fields.
The remaining $161,425 has been allocated for site work and reconstruction at the Primary School, to include playground improvements, air conditioning in a hand full of classrooms and installation of wireless technology.
The project will require the district to expend $200,375 from its capital reserve fund. Superintendent Randall Squier has stated in the past that the remainder of the project’s cost will be covered by state building aid and EXCEL aid, and will have no impact on the local tax levy.
According to District Clerk Michele Rice, information regarding the proposed capital project will be mailed to district residents as part of the November issue of the Blackhawk Bulletin. While residents will receive the information prior to the Nov. 18 vote, she said, they may not have it in hand before the public hearing dates. Information, including the proposed scope of work for the project, is posted on the district’s website, www.oxac.org. Those seeking additional information are encouraged to contact the district office at 843-2025.
In order to be eligible to vote in the referendum, a person must be a US citizen of at least 18 years of age, who has resided in the district for at least 30 days prior to the vote. Absentee ballots are available for eligible voters who are unable to make it to the polls. Anyone seeking an absentee ballot should contact Rice at 843-2025, ext. 4040.
