No one injured in Tuesday vehicle fire in Oxford

OXFORD – A man hauling cattle had his truck suddenly burst into flames after stopping at a stop sign in the Town of Oxford Tuesday.
At around 10:30 a.m., the Oxford Fire Department responded to Wackford Road at the intersection of County Rt. 35 after a pick-up’s engine burst into flames.
The Oxford Police said the truck’s 78-year-old driver, Martin Rowe, got out of his vehicle at the intersection after noticing a small amount of smoke coming from his hood.
“He got out and was going to check on the engine, but flames started burning through the hood so instead he went to the rear and evacuated the cow he was transporting,” said Oxford Police Chief Richard Nolan.
As firemen fought to quell the fire using foam, the unhurt animal could be seen a short distance away tied to the stop sign.
No one was injured in the fire, but emergency crews were forced to close Rt. 35 for about 20 minutes.
Nolan said the cause of the fire appeared to be mechanical and no tickets were issued.
