Local gift shop collecting for Roots and Wings
NORWICH – Thymely Treasures gift shop, 1 South Broad St., will hold its first Shopping Cart Challenge from Jan. 19 to 21 to benefit Catholic Charities’ Roots and Wings program.
Patrons of the unique gift and home decor store who donate a non-perishable food item will then have an opportunity to reach into a special “coupon grab-bag,” according to Thymely Treasures owner Susan Wood. Inside, they’ll find a number of discounts, ranging from 10 to 50 percent off their next purchase.
Thanks to her prior experience in human services, Wood said she’s quite familiar with the needs of local food pantries such as Roots and Wings, and she’d like to make this a yearly event.
“I know that they tend to run low this time of year and I thought this would be the best way to help them stock their shelves a little,” she added.
Roots and Wings Director of Community Outreach Gary Quarella said Wood’s timing couldn’t be any better, as the winter months are always a great opportunity for a food drive or Shopping Cart Challenge such as this.
“Due to our funding cycles, there are typically no funds available or released until the end of the first quarter, although we might see something in early spring,” stated Quarella. “Until then, most food pantries, including Roots and Wings, are forced to rely upon what we have in stock.”
According to Quarella, Roots and Wings provided services to approximately 12,450 families in 2010, up from 11,141 the previous year, and 4,500 to 4,600 families took advantage of the program’s food pantry. In addition, Roots and Wings’ Homeless Prevention Program assisted over 600 families last year. While most of that assistance was preventative in nature, Quarella reported that approximately 12 percent of those were truly homeless. Toys for Tots this year provided gifts for approximately 700 families, including nearly 1,800 children, he added.
“This is a time when food pantries tend to run low, so this was a great time for her to be doing this for us,” said Quarella. “We hope she knows how much we appreciate this.”
Thymely Treasures is open Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information call 244-9582.
