Funds still available in ADC Barn Restoration Project
CHENANGO COUNTY – A handful of Chenango County barns will get a facelift this spring as a result of a local group dedicated to stimulating economic development in the local agricultural industry.
In August, the Chenango County Agricultural Development Council unveiled the Barn Revitalization Program, a matching grant designed to help farmers pay to paint their existing barns.
According to ADC Chairperson Jennifer Tavares, the intent is to help instill pride in local agriculture.
A total of $2,000 was allocated for the program, only a portion of which was distributed in the first round of funding.
“We have assisted two farms thus far, who expect to paint their barns in the spring,” she reported. That leaves sufficient funds to assist three more farms. Those interested have until Feb. 25 to submit an application.
According to Tavares, the $400 reimbursement grant can be used to purchase paint and supplies, and must be matched with either a cash or other equity contribution.
“It’s an opportunity to pay for quite a bit of supplies,” she said, noting that labor costs will not be reimbursed.
To be eligible, applicants must own a farm or agricultural property in Chenango County. A photo of the structure, which must be at least 2,000 square feet and “in significant need of repainting,” must be submitted with he application. Working farms will be given preference, Tavares said.
“Upon completion of the painting projects, recipients will be expected to submit photos of the painted barn along with receipts from the paint and supplies in order to receive reimbursement,” she explained.
The deadline for submissions is Feb. 25.
Applications can be obtained at Cornell Cooperative Extension, 99 North Broad St. in Norwich, or by contacting Tavares at 334-5532.
