Two seek spots on Sherburne board
SHERBURNE – Village voters have a choice in an upcoming election between two candidates who are vying to fill a vacancy on the board of trustees.
Voting takes place from noon to 9 p.m. on March 15 in the town building, 1 Canal St.
Incumbent Trustee Jack Staley hopes to retain his seat. Village Mayor William Acee appointed Staley to fill the unexpired term of Stephen M. Dunshee, who left office last June to become Chenango County’s Assistant District Attorney.
Elena Casscles actually filed her petition for the position with the village clerk’s office two weeks before Staley did. She said she has been planning to run for the post ever since being defeated in last year’s board elections. She lost to incumbent Christopher Tomaselli narrowly, earning 184 votes to Tomaselli’s 228.
Both Staley and Casscles reside on Chenango Avenue. Among other projects, Staley said he would like the opportunity to see through the repairs recommended for the well-traveled but bumpy thoroughfare. It is the only street in the village that doesn’t have sidewalks.
Casscles, who has been a village resident since 1973, said she would work to bring more jobs and industry to the village.
She has served as member and president of the Sherburne Earlville School District Board of Education, was a longtime member of the Sherburne Rotary, a founding member of the area’s soccer program, and a volunteer with the Village Fire Department and Emergency Squad. In her professional life, the candidate was a training systems analyst for Victory Markets, providing technical support for 24 groceries.
In addition to serving as trustee, Staley is a member of the town’s planning board. He is a veteran of the Vietnam War, a former policeman and worked as director for support services for the Southern Nevada Water Authority and the Las Vegas Valley Water District. A native of St. Louis, he moved to the village four years ago.
