Who will be the next Chenango County Dairy Princess?
CHENANGO COUNTY – The reign of 2010 Dairy Princess Megan Brandt will come to a close next month and Chenango County’s Dairy Princess Committee is in search of a successor to her crown.
“We are seeking candidates for princess and dairy ambassadors,” said Terry Ives, who chairs the Chenango County Dairy Promotion Committee and, along with Marge Davis, oversees the Dairy Princess Program.
Since 1963, a fresh-faced, farm girl wearing the Chenango County Dairy Princess crown and sash has served as the chief ambassador of the county’s largest industry.
“A candidate must have a sincere desire to promote dairy products and be a user of REAL dairy products,” Ives said. They must also be willing to spread the word about the benefits of dairy at meetings and events around the county. Because, as the wholesome representative for the local dairy industry, the reigning princess’ duties include gracing parade floats, educating children about agriculture and serving milk punch at countless meetings and events.
In order to wear the dairy princess crown, a candidate must be between the ages of 16 and 24 and be the daughter of a farmer or someone else connected to the dairy industry.
The ambassadors who fill out the Dairy Court, must also have an interest in promoting dairy. They can be boys or girls, and must be at least 12 years old.
Those interested in learning more about the Dairy Princess and Ambassador Programs are invited to attend an information session at 8 p.m. on Monday, May 9 at the 4-H Center at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chenango County, 99 North Broad Street in Norwich.
Chenango County’s next Dairy Princess will be crowned at the 2011 Dairy Princess Banquet, to be held at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 20 at the Chenango County Pomona Grange Hall in Norwich.
