Norwich boys win track and field division title
Track and Field
Norwich 111, Johnson City 30 (boys)
Johnson City 73, Norwich 52 (girls)
JOHNSON CITY – The outcome was never in doubt in Tuesday’s meet at Johnson City.
Norwich’s boys completed a perfect run through the STAC Central Division, and won the school’s first division championship since the 1996 season.
“I wasn’t 100 percent sure what was going to happen tonight,” said Norwich boys coach, Paul Sims. “I thought we had a good chance to win, but I didn’t want us going into the meet overconfident.”
Norwich left little room for Johnson City to score points winning 15 of 17 events, and sweeping all of the events in the field. Patrick Taylor took the long jump, triple, jump, and high jump; Matt Murray competed in the 200-meter dash for the first time, and won that race. Murray also captured the 400-meter dash to give himself a three-win day. Max Morse also picked up three wins taking the pole vault and 800 meters, while teaming on Norwich’s season-best effort in the 1,600-meter relay (3:33). That group also included Murray, David Jones, and Nate Ashton. “That time was less than two seconds off our school record, and we did that in a dual meet without anyone close to us,” Sims said, who is looking toward the lofty competition at the Parkhurst Invitational Saturday at Maine-Endwell. “Winning a division title is something we have looked toward since day one. Not only did we accomplish our goal, but we did it convincingly.”
Norwich’s girls won seven events in its most competitive STAC division meet this season. Senior Cleo Daoud led the Tornado with four overall victories.
Next for NHS is the Oneonta Invitational on Friday.
