Plane makes emergency landing at Lt. Warren E. Eaton Airport
NORWICH – A single-engine aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing at Lt. Warren Eaton Airport after its onboard electrical system failed.
The plane, a six-passenger Piper Saratoga, was piloted by David Texeira of Michigan. A single passenger, Robin Kingsley, was also onboard.
According to a flight plan filed by Texeira with the FAA, the couple departed Hamburg Airport in Erie County at 11:50 a.m. Thursday. They were en route to Westover Metropolitan Airport in Chickopee, Mass.
Less than an hour into the flight, the plane experienced the electrical problem. Texeira was directed to the Norwich airport by the Boston Air Traffic Control Center. Boston Center alerted the Chenango County 911 Center to the situation at 12:43 p.m., when the aircraft was 2 to 3 miles from the airport.
The plane was already on the ground when the first emergency responders from the Norwich Fire Department arrived on the scene at approximately 12:54.
“Upon landing it appears the front landing gear collapsed,” said Lt. Richard Cobb of the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office. According to Cobb, the plane traveled approximately 800 feet down the runway before coming to a stop.
Neither Texeira nor Kingsley were injured.
County officials immediately closed Runway 1-9 as they awaited the arrival of the FFA. It was reopened at approximately 6 p.m., after the runway had been cleared.
The Norwich Fire Department, Chenango County Sheriff’s Office, Chenango County Emergency Management Office and county airport officials were on the scene. The investigation was handed over to the FAA upon their arrival.
