Hunts Pond set to lose picnic pavilion, administrative building
SOUTH NEW BERLIN – Hunts Pond State Forest, which was a state park until last May, will be losing its picnic pavilion by autumn and its administrative building within the next year.
The administrative building, which housed the registration office and caretaker location, has not been used since 2010. According to Supervising Forester Robert Slavicek, the NYSDEC Office of Lands and Forests plans to dismantle, surplus and auction off the structure to prevent damage. “We want to dismantle it before it gets vandalized,” he said.
The removal of the building could take well over a year, Slavicek explained. “It has to get approval through the Office of General Services.”
The picnic pavilion, on the other hand, will be dismantled and moved to the Three Rivers State Park in Onondaga County. Forester Rich Chapin said they plan on moving the pavilion before Sept. 1. “There’s a greater need for it up there,” he explained.
Hunts Pond is still accessible to the public, however visitation is restricted to daylight hours. According to Slavicek, this is because the grounds do not have an adequate public restroom which is needed for areas where campsites are so concentrated. “It’s a public health law,” he said.
Fishing and hiking are still allowed and since it is a state forest, there is no longer a need for a fee to take a boat into the water.
