DOT meeting addresses Rt. 8 bridges
NEW BERLIN – The plans for replacing two bridges along a state highway through the towns of Norwich and New Berlin will be revealed during a public information meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Unadilla Valley Central School cafeteria, located at 4328 state Route 8.
The New York State Department of Transportation has determined that the bridges on state Route 8 over White Store Creek and Great Brook, both built 75 years ago, should be replaced. The bridges exhibit deterioration, a NYSDOT press release said, and officials will be inspecting them regularly to ensure that they remain safe until the work can begin, anticipated in 2013.
Under the proposed design, some private property acquisitions at each site may be needed; however, the extent and locations have not yet been determined.
NYSDOT’s preferred method for replacing the bridge over White Store Creek in Norwich is to replace one bridge lane at a time while maintaining a single lane of alternating one-way traffic on the other side of the bridge. The resulting bridge will be wider than the existing bridge, but would be aligned the same.
Two alternatives being evaluated for the replacement of the bridge over Great Brook in New Berlin are replacement on existing alignment, or replacement on a new alignment. If the bridge is replaced on its existing alignment, a temporary bridge would be constructed on the east side of the existing bridge to use as a part of a temporary on-site detour during construction. Under the realignment alternative, the bridge and roadway would be aligned slightly to the east of the existing bridge and the existing bridge would be used to maintain traffic during construction.
The construction is expected to take two years to complete. The current estimated cost of the project is $5.1 million. The cost and schedule are subject to change as capital program resources dictate.
