Woman accused of embezzling from Sherburne Big M
SHERBURNE – A 47-year old Sherburne woman stands accused of embezzling more than $97,000 from the grocery store where she worked.
Michelle R. Markham was arrested earlier this week by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office and charged with second degree grand larceny, a class C felony in conjunction with the alleged crime.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Markham is believed to have siphoned approximately $97,400 from the cash register at the Sherburne Big M over a 17-month period between March 2010 and August 2011. She was a longtime employee of the independent grocery store, where she worked as a cashier.
The county law enforcement agency are being assisted in their ongoing investigation by the Sherburne Village Police.
At the time of her arrest, Markham was found to be in possession of prescription narcotics for which she did not have a prescription. As a result, she was also charged with seventh degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class A misdemeanor.
According to Chenango County Assistant District Attorney Stephen M. Dunshee, Markham was cooperative. She released on her own recognizance following her arraignment and the matter adjourned to allow her time to retain legal counsel.
She will reappear in Sherburne Town Court at a later date.
