Irene interferes with fundraiser for Oxford's EMS Explorers
OXFORD – Those hoping to indulge their sweet tooth and get their car washed this weekend at a car wash and bake sale for the Oxford Fire Department’s EMS Explorer’s program will have to wait thanks to Hurricane Irene.
The fundraiser, originally scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Sunday at Blueox, has been postponed because of the storm.
While many departments have fire explorer posts, Oxford’s EMS Explorer program is the first of its kind in the county.
“We just started the program at the end of May,” explained Tim Wakefield, who is one of the group’s four advisors.
According to Wakefield, the post was formed to help address the shortage of volunteers entering the volunteer fire and emergency medical services. Its primary goal is to provide participants between the ages of 14 and 18 with hands on experience and basic first aid and CPR certifications, so that when they turn 18 they are prepared to become certified EMTs.
Currently, the group has eight active participants.
“I think it’s something that’s going to build,” Wakefield said.
