Roof valve to blame for ammonia exposure at Agro Farma
SOUTH EDMESTON – A newly-installed roof valve is being blamed for a case of ammonia exposure at Agro Farma’s production facility, 669 County Road 25, yesterday morning.
According to Kelly LaCorte, communications coordinator for the maker of the popular Chobani Greek-style yogurt, a third-party contractor was taken by ambulance to the Bassett Medical Center for evaluation and is currently in stable condition.
Said LaCorte, “Our thoughts are with him and his family, and we wish him a full and fast recovery.”
Due to the quick response of the plant’s production team – as well as the New Berlin Fire Department and Emergency Squad, Cooperstown Medical Transport, Chenango County Bureau of Fire and the Town of New Berlin Police – the scene of the accident was controlled and cleared within an hour-and-a-half, reported LaCorte. She added that a handful of employees were cleared from an adjacent area, but there was no need to evacuate the entire facility.
“Safety is of utmost importance at Chobani, and we greatly thank all internal and external parties involved in responding to and quickly controlling this dangerous situation,” she said. “We are currently assessing the situation to prevent future occurrences from taking place.”
