Coventry, Smithville kick off Fire Prevention Week

CHENANGO COUNTY – Oct. 9-15 is Fire Prevention Week, and while many of the county’s fire departments will celebrate with open houses following Columbus Day, the Coventry and Smithville departments will kick things off Sunday.
The Smithville Fire Department will hold its annual pancake breakfast and open house at 7 a.m. on Sunday at its new fire house, State Highway 41 in Smithville Flats, while the Coventry department’s open house will run from 10 a.m. to noon at the fire station, 109 North Road, Greene.
According to Coventry Fire Chief Daniel Clark, information on fire prevention will be available, firefighter demonstrations will be held and the department’s fire trucks will be on display.
Deputy Fire Coordinator Mike Beckwith said other fire department open houses across the county will include Oxford, 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 12; Norwich, 6 p.m. Oct. 13 and Earlville, 6 p.m. Oct. 12. Smyrna will hold its annual pancake breakfast and open house at 7 a.m. Oct. 22.
A number of county fire departments, said Beckwith, will wait until the end of the month and trick-or-treating time to hold their open houses. The annual celebration of fire prevention week, he added, has dwindled in recent years. It’s not, however, due to a lack of participation by local departments, but by the community as a whole. More and more, he said, that seems to be the common denominator.
“Even in a city such as Norwich, participation is down. But guys take a lot of pride in these open houses and it’s a chance to spread a lot of information on fire prevention, to seek membership and to promote themselves and what they do for the community,” said Beckwith. “These are dedicated people ... they’re there all the time.”
As part of Fire Prevention Week, Beckwith said it’s important for people to make sure their smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors (see sidebar) and fire extinguishers are maintained and functioning properly. The National Fire Prevention Association recommends replacing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, as well as extinguishers, every eight years.
Fire Prevention Week is the longest running public health and safety observance on record in the United States, according to the NFPA. Since 1925, the president of the United States has signed a proclamation proclaiming national observance during Fire Prevention Week. This year’s theme is “It’s Fire Prevention Week! Protect Your Family From Fire!”
