Youth volunteers honored for service
NORWICH – On Monday, the Chenango County Board of Supervisors honored long-standing community youth workers Inga Britt Nielson, Steve Perrin and Laureen Clarke.
Board Chairman Richard B. Decker, on behalf of county supervisors and the Chenango County Youth Bureau, issued formal proclamations to each in recognition for their service.
“Volunteers are an essential part of programs offered to youth within the county, providing numerous hours of service and contribution of talents to entice positive youth development,” he said.
Each recipient was formally introduced to the board and honored for their work. Nielson, a Chenango County Girl Scout leader, New Berlin Art Forum Vice President and teacher, was described as “an outstanding role model that you would want for your youth.” Her presenter, Girl Scout Troops representative Bonnie Jean Bauer, said Nielson dedicated her life to scouting and “has a heart for the work that she does.” In turn, Nielson said there wouldn’t be any scouting if it weren’t for her volunteer troop leaders.
Retired Delaware-Chenango-Madison-Otsego BOCES teacher Steve Perrin was recognized for his 39 years working with thousands of students. “He is very deserving ... he’s always interacting with students in and outside of the classroom,” said BOCES Adult Education Coordinator Jim Haugli.
Youth Bureau Director Kathy Clemens bestowed outgoing Chenango County Probation Department Director Laureen Clarke with the honor, saying: “She’s helped Chenango County’s families and youths, and has always been willing to look at things differently to solve problems, to look through another lens.” Clarke said youth are the foundation for the future. “Since my first day on the job in 1978, it’s always been where my heart has been,” she said.
