Earlville loses another mayor
EARLVILLE – William Excell was appointed Village of Earlville Mayor following an emergency meeting Wednesday night in which former Mayor Mark Doeberl stepped down from the position, citing personal problems.
Excell, a native of the village, will serve until a general election is held March 20 to fill Doeberl’s remaining year of his term. Excell said he would most probably run for the position.
“I had thought about running for mayor down the line. Under the circumstances, I feel it’s probably time to step up,” he said this morning.
Trustee Henry Moore was appointed deputy mayor. The village is also seeking candidates to fill Excell’s vacant trustee position, and has asked for interested residents to send a letter to the village. The appointed mayor will make the trustee appointment at the Jan. 10 board meeting.
Excell is a highway maintenance worker for the New York State Highway Department, a position he has held for nine years. He and his wife of 22 years, Linda, have two daughters.
Doeberl, 50, won election to the Earlville mayoral post last spring after having taken over for previous Mayor Toni Campbell, who was charged and later imprisoned for stealing money from her employer, Chenango Valley Pet Foods. On Saturday, state police arrested Doeberl on charges of driving while intoxicated. Reports say Doeberl was pulled over at a checkpoint on Rt. 12B near Morrisville Saturday afternoon, at which time he was allegedly found to have blood alcohol content of .10 percent. He was charged with DWI, having a blood alcohol level above .08 percent, and consuming alcoholic beverages in a vehicle. He is scheduled to appear in the Town of Eaton court in January.
