Norwich hosts longtime rival Oneonta tonight

NORWICH – At Norwich High School tonight, longtime rival Oneonta brings its boys to Jack Jones Gymnasium with the aim of handing the Tornado their third division loss of the season.
Oneonta (2-3, 6-3) fell five points short of Johnson City last week to suffer its third division loss, and needs a victory against Norwich to avoid falling further in the STAC Central Division standings. Meanwhile, Norwich dropped its second league game of the season last Tuesday to Seton Catholic Central. Both of Norwich’s losses have come at home, and not coincidentally, each of those clubs (Susquehanna Valley being the other conqueror) had superior size to Norwich.
Oneonta is not unlike Seton Catholic Central and Susquehanna Valley possessing a front line of three players 6-foot-2 or taller. “Oneonta is a very powerful club who will set multiple strong screens to free their players up and try to create openings for their big men inside,” said Norwich coach Tom Collier. “The biggest issue we face in this game will be rebounding as they attack the offensive glass with their power players.”
Collier pointed to Mike Calkins and Bryce Wooden as the players to watch with each averaging around 18 points a game. Calkins is a smooth 6-foot-5 lefty, and Wooden is well-built slasher to the basket. Add to the mix 6-foot-4 banger, Sean Getman. Those three inside players are complemented by the outside shooting of Ryne Rivino and David Wright. Rivino is a three-point specialist, and Wright is the floor general who is capable of knocking down outside shots if left open.
“Defensively, we have to battle through their screens and establish our presence in the post areas,” Collier said. “We need to make sure we limit their positioning as well as be able to control the boards.”
Norwich (3-2, 7-2) will counter Oneonta’s size advantage with quickness and better overall depth. As has been the case in every previous game, Collier will operate with a nine- ten- and perhaps 11-man rotation in an effort to grind down the opponent. “Offensively, we’ll need to knock down some shots from beyond the arc, and keep the tempo upbeat,” Collier said. “We’ll have to sprint up and down the court on every possession.”
The varsity contest will start at approximately 7:45 p.m.
