Boy Scouts plan Pinewood Derby
NORWICH – The Baden-Powell Boy Scout district will hold its 34th annual pinewood derby at 1 p.m. on March 11 at the VFW post in Norwich.
This will be the first time in years that the district will host the race as Pack 62 had taken over the responsibilities so the district could focus on raising money and awareness for scouting.
The district race will be the final contest following the individual pack races throughout the next two weeks.
“This will be the first year at the VFW, friends and family are welcome to attend to see the races,” said District Commissioner George Blood.
The track will be provided to the district by Pack 62 and pack leader Nancy Dye. Matthew Peterson will assist with the track construction and monitoring the computer system that records every race time.
The Pinewood Derby has been a tradition for cub scouts since 1953 and has given countless boys a chance to learn about aerodynamics, wood-carving and participating in a competitive environment.
The competition begins at home after each boy is given a solid pine block, four plastic wheels and four nails. It is then up to the scout to carve, cut and shape the block of wood into a bonafide racing machine.
The Derby itself institutes a four-lane track which allows the scouts to race multiple cars at once, known as “heats.” After a series of 10 heats, the finalists compete for first, second and third place trophies.
The scouts will have two hours before the beginning of this year’s district competition to test the track and make modifications before the races begin.
“It should be a good first year back with the district,” said Blood.
