NORWICH – For the second straight time, Norwich’s victory hopes were pinned on a win in the final event.
Unlike last Friday against Windsor when they picked up the victory in the 400-meter free relay, the Tornado were upended by Section III Holland Patent, and fell two points shy of a tenth win this season.
“It was a great meet all the way down through,” said Norwich coach Kevin Diefenbacher. “You can go back over the lineup and say you wish you changed this or that, but you just have to set it up at the beginning, and let it run.”
Despite winning just five out of 12 events, Norwich pulled even after the 100-yard breaststroke at 83-83 with Nick Mooney leading a one-two finish. One event earlier, the Tornado’s Killian Benedict kept his team alive capturing the 100-yard backstroke.
“I really can’t be disappointed, we had 11 personal-best swims tonight,” Diefenbacher said. “They just had faster guys left at the end.”
Greg Todd (200-yard freestyle) and Dakota Armondi (diving) added victories for Norwich (9-4) who remain idle until the Section IV Class B meet Feb. 18 at Owego.

GREENE – Greene stopped a three-game skid with its best offensive game of the season Tuesday.
The Trojans had more assists than turnovers for the first time this season, and also pulled down 18 offensive rebounds. “When we weren’t getting points from great passing, the points came from great hustle,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton. “We shot it very well tonight, and we did that because we made the extra pass and found the open girl.”
Kaitlin Gorton led Greene with 20 points, Rebecca Smith had 14 points and 10 rebounds – eight boards off the offensive glass – and Jessica Brooks netted 10.

SOUTH OTSELIC – In a non-league game against Blessed Virgin Mary of Camillus, OV senior Trevor Marston gave his club the lead hitting two free throws with 27 seconds left for a one-point victory Tuesday.
The Vikings shook off a second straight slow start in which they scored just 13 points in the first half to trail by seven. “We’ve just been out of sync offensively the last two games,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “In the second half, we regrouped and focused as a team. We showed more patience, and we created more opportunities out of our defense with some steals and transition baskets.”

G-MU 48, Laurens 30
COPES CORNERS – G-MU avenged an early-season loss to Laurens dominating the Leopards over the middle two periods Tuesday night.
Laurens jumped out to a 13-5 lead after a single quarter as the Raiders showed impatience on the offensive end. “We were looking to pass and score immediately. We were telling (the kids) that they didn’t have to take to take the first shot or shoot after the first pass,” said G-MU coach Bill Hartman. “In the second quarter, we started putting it together more.”
G-MU erased the eight-point deficit and grabbed a one-point lead at intermission. The eight minutes of the third quarter were perhaps the Raiders’ best of the season. The one-point advantage became 19 in a 19-1 third stanza. “We did just about everything right in the third quarter,” Hartman said. “We got after them more intensely and defended all of their shots.”
Plus, five players had at least three points in the quarter, and none more than five, Hartman said. Tim French led G-MU with 13 points, and Eddie Ray Cotton along with DeMario Reed scored 11 apiece.
