Sometimes you just need to get away, ya know?

And that’s exactly how I’d been feeling for the last month or so.
It had nothing to do with my personal happiness; I wasn’t depressed. I love the area and the people in it – most of the time – and the weather has certainly made everything a bit more ‘shiny.’
However, I’ve always loved traveling and since I was 11, no more than a year or so has gone by without me finding a way to make it out of the state for a couple of days or more. Since I returned to New York in the summer of 2009, I haven’t gotten that chance ... until this past weekend.
For the full story of my journey, check out my blog this afternoon, but the CliffsNotes are this: Took a flight to Maryland to see my best friend on St. Patrick’s Day weekend, bought his car, drove it home.
Now, many things about the weekend were amazing (again, see blog) but what I really needed was to just get out of town for a bit. Dealing with airport security and the hassle of the crowded terminals aren’t exactly a walk in the park. Driving home alone for five and a half hours can be described as boring at best.
But for me, none of it mattered compared to the thrill of being in a new, exciting location.
Everyone knows that seeing the same people, doing the same things, following the same routine day in and day out can become fairly tedious.
Of course you love your family, I’m not arguing that, but sometimes you just don’t want to see their faces for a day ...
Am I right?
Personally, I love my job. Many may not, there may be varying degrees of love and hate, but no matter your feelings, we’ve all had those days where getting out of bed in the morning is the absolute last thing we want to do.
Now, when those days outweigh the perky, skip to the coffee pot days, it’s time to get out.
I went to Baltimore – one of the biggest cities on the east coast – for St. Patrick’s Day – one of the most celebrated holidays of the year, but it doesn’t have to be that extreme. Try camping for a weekend. Maybe a drive down to Pennsylvania to visit a firework warehouse or to go antiqueing.
If extreme is more up your alley, check out flights around the country. Southwest has some great deals this time of year and if you check out some of the places that aren’t spring break “hot-spots,” you may find an incredible time for much cheaper than you think.
Wherever the destination, everyone needs to find some time to get away. Life can be tough. Life can be down-right insensitive, it doesn’t care about your feelings or how stressed you are. Life will throw what ever it wants in your general direction whenever it wants, and there isn’t much you can do about it.
However, you can hold life at bay for a while by knowing when it’s time to detach your mind and body from the everyday strains and take that vacation. Whether it be a beach, the woods, or a Girl Talk concert surrounded by thousands of people ... sometimes you just need to get away, ya know?
